Quiet weekend

We had a very lazy weekend and mainly relaxed on the boat.  We went for a couple of walks each day and we were very traditional on Sunday as I cooked a roast.

We usually visit a pub at the weekend and were very disappointed that the closest pub, which was old and on the canal, didn't allow dogs.  This put us off so we never bothered with it; probably just as well as we would probably have popped in a few times as it was only just down the tow path.  On Saturday afternoon we tried the pub in Branston.   It was packed with all the local 'white ven men' ready to watch the Chelsea vs Manchester City match on one of the many large screens.  We tend to make a big entrance when it's cold as we are really well wrapped up and it takes ages to get the layers off whilst controlling a dog, ordering drinks and trying to look inconspicuous.  Loads of people spoke with us and they were all really friendly.  It's strange being like a foreigner as we forget we have southern accents until people ask where we are from.

On Sunday morning we tried watching the Murray match but gave up after the first two sets as we both found it too excruciating to watch.

We now only have a week to wait until the lock at Fradley is opened after the gates have all been replaced.  We are going to head for the centre of Birmingham (100 yards from New Street station) via Stafford.  The route is 58 miles long and goes through 50 locks.  We will travel on the Trent & Mersey, Staffordshire & Worcester, Birmingham Main Line and the Worcester & Birmingham canals.

Cold but sunny all weekend.

Visitors attracted by the smell of meat roasting on the boat.
